NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS

Hello! Welcome to CCWM! My name is Dr. Julie Schatz-Stevens and I’m a Licensed Psychologist and Licensed Professional Counselor. I believe that therapy is a powerful support for all who choose to embark on the journey. Through therapy, new coping strategies can be learned, communication patterns can be changed, and setbacks in life can be overcome. I look forward to learning more about you and creating a safe space to do our therapeutic work together.

Here’s a bit about my education and training: I received my undergraduate degree in North Dakota and completed my graduate education in Indiana at the University of Notre Dame. I also completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Notre Dame’s Center for Children and Families that was focused on intervention programming for family conflict. When I moved to Michigan, I completed additional coursework at Western Michigan University for licensing eligibility in Michigan.

I also am a Professor of Psychology and Counselor Education at Aquinas College, and teach classes such as: Family, Couples, and Marriage Counseling, Counseling Children and Adolescents, Family Violence, and the Psychology of Women. I believe that empowering the next generation of therapists is an important contribution I can make to create more mental health care access in our

communities.

I believe that walking the walk is important in my own life and de-stigmatizing mental health care is an essential change that needs to happen in our society. Because of this, I am an advocate for raising awareness about mental health issues and how they can impact individuals and families. I have provided many continuing education trainings to mental health providers and community

organizations and businesses on domestic violence, mental health care issues related to children and teens, and recognizing depression and anxiety in patients.

In my current therapy work, I see older children, teens and women but have extensive experience working with children who have experienced abuse, women who have experienced domestic violence, bullying, parenting, blended family and divorce issues, depression, anxiety, family relationships, women’s issues (superwoman syndrome, work-life balance) and stress management.

The therapeutic approaches I draw from are those that have been empirically validated with research support - primarily Cognitive Behavioral, Emotion- Focused, Solution-Focused, trauma informed, and play - and individualizing that care for each client, couple, or family. I believe that everyone has an important voice to be heard and I seek to create a safe, collaborative environment to work together in helping you work through life’s many challenges.
