Hello and welcome to my page where you can learn some things about me as a therapist. I graduated from the University of Michigan in 1989 with a Masters degree in Social Work (MSW). I am a clinical social worker with over 25 years experience providing individual and family therapy in a variety of settings including child welfare, hospice, community and mental health agencies including Pine Rest, Network 180 and the Christian Counseling Center. I am currently employed with the Veterans Affairs where I provide psychotherapy to veterans and their families.
I have extensive training in trauma therapy including being trained and certified in Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy. I am also trained and ceritified in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for depression as well as chronic pain, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based therapy including stress reduction, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). While I offer and provide all of these therapies, the one I use most and in my experience patients benefit from and have the best long lasting success with is ACT. ACT is not diagnostic dependent; it has proven to be successful in treating anxiety, depression, addiction, obsessive compulsive disorders, adjustment disorders, personality disorders, trauma, stress, chronic pain and relationship issues just to name a few challenges that bring people into therapy seeking help.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is a psychotherapy based on cutting edge research into how the human mind works.The unusual name of this therapy comes from one of it's key themes: Learn how to accept those things that are out of your control, and commit to changing those things that can be changed to make your life better. This is a very active therapy. It's not a therapy where we just talk about your problems. It's a therapy in which you actively learn new skills to improve your quality of life. The overarching objective of ACT is to help patients develop psychological flexibility which is the ability to respond to life in a workable way, a way that enables you to live a vital, meaningful life. To do that, we will spend some time talking about what you really want out of your life; what is important and meaningful to you, deep in your heart and soul. This process is called 'clarifying your values.' Your values are your heart's deepest desires for what you want to do and how you want to be while you are on planet earth. Then, using that information as a guide, we'll look at how you can set goals and take action to change your life for the better and in the process develop a sense of meaning, purpose and vitality.
The other aim is to teach you a set of skills that will allow you to handle painful thoughts and feelings far more effectively, in such a way that they have much less impact and influence over you. These are called 'mindfulness skills.' Mindfulness is a mental state of awareness, openness and focus. In a state of mindfulness, you can effectively handle even the most difficult feelings, urges, memories, thoughts and sensations. As you learn to do so, you can break self-defeating habits or destructive patterns of behavior; let go of self-defeating beliefs; rise beyond your fears and change your attitude in life-enhancing ways.
A key part of therapy will involve you learning those mindfulness skills in the session and then taking them home and practicing them in between sessions. The more you practice, the more benefits you will get, and vice versa. What this means is that in some sessions we will bring up some of these difficult thoughts, feelings, memories, sensations and urges so you can practice learning these new skills to handle them better. This happens in a safe and secure environment. At all times we will be working collaboratively, as equal team-players. You will never be pushed or coerced into anything you are unwilling to do. You will learn by your direct experience that you do not need to learn to control your thoughts and feelings but you also do not need to let them control you.
I absolutely love my work as a therapist, it truly is more than just a job for me. It is my life passion to walk along with others on their path to connecting to their values and living a life rich in purpose and meaning.
