Laurie Schmit, LMSW

Hello and thank you for considering me as your counselor! My counseling style is affirming and collaborative; ideal for clients who want support moving from surviving into thriving, in a relaxed/comfortable setting. Caring guidance and knowledgeable support can make all the difference in the world! My goal is for clients to feel safe enough to then transform fear, hurt, resentment, and chronic stress. They can also align an internal self and an external self into one authentic self. It can be challenging yet exhilarating to allow vulnerability and step into the discomfort of healing our issues.

I see only adult clients and primarily work with anxiety, professional burnout, adjustments/life transitions, and women's issues. I'm well versed in issues of adult children of alcoholics (ACOA), codependency, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) score impacts on current functioning & resiliency, and the Highly Sensitive Personality (HSP) work. I'm working toward becoming a "Certified Compassion Fatigue Professional" and should finish in the coming months. I love working with clients in the helping professions and do provide some EAP services. I'm also personally and professionally interested in the work of Brené Brown and similar authors. I offer guided meditation workshops as well. Other areas of interest/specialty are clients working through divorce/relationship loss, career change/job loss, empty nest, retirement, motherless daughters, and grief/loss.

I have a BA in Counseling Psychology (2001) and my Master's in Social Work (2007), with a Clinical License in Michigan. My own personal growth journey began back in 1989. I've experienced deep healing and became driven to work with others to increase quality of life, vitality, joy, self-worth, and emotion tolerance. It's an honor to now assist others in their healing. Clients say I'm a good listener & very approachable. I provide judgement-free listening and guidance. I have been there too--afraid, sad, lost, overwhelmed, numb, anxious. It's hard to know what to do or where to turn. I have a breadth of learning and experiences, personally and professionally, to help guide you on your journey. Let's work together, with activities that help integrate lessons into REAL life--taking learning "from the head to the heart through the hands."
